Just as Jesus listened to the two on the road to Emmaus, a spiritual director listens to the story of the person seeking spiritual direction. In contrast to much of our lives, the spiritual direction meeting is a quiet and contemplative hour guided by the Holy Spirit. Together, the spiritual director and the person receiving direction hear how God is present and active in his or her life and consider how to respond to God's invitations.
With many experienced spiritual directors on stafft the Emmaus Spirituality Center endeavors to match seekers with the best director to accompany them on their faith journey. Lay and religious men and women, Catholics and other Christian denominations, and various ranges of age, ethnicities, and life experiences serve as spiritual directors at ESC.
When you begin to meet with a spiritual director, she or he will answer any questions you have about the ministry (including its confidentiality), confirm its focus, let you know how often meetings generally occur, and perhaps discuss the difference between spiritual direction and pastoral counseling.
After several meetings with a spiritual director, you will have ascertained that you feel secure in being accompanied by this person and able to share deeper aspects of yourself.
